After our berry picking adventure we ventured back to Half Moon Bay where the fog had finally burned off. The beach was a little windy, chilly but sunny. The waves crashed, the sand was cool and the kids were in heaven. Half Moon Bay is a dog friendly place and we were pleased to find a beach that Lola could enjoy with us too. She was a bit annoyed that she had to stay on leash and was bugged every time Josh moved more than five feet away from her but eventually she settled in and contented herself scouring crumbs from the picnic blanket.

Claire found this piece of seaweed and thought it was the most interesting toy.
Its Friday night and what are you doing? I was pondering how to celebrate Josh for his birthday (Saturday) and his one and only day off of the week. We’d been tossing around ideas all week but it wasn’t until after we’d put the kids to bed Friday that we got serious about discussing how to spend the day.
We love Half Moon Bay. When we moved up to the area Half Moon Bay was our most frequented spot and the coffee company there was our most frequented eatery. Sadly, we haven’t been there since (gasp) before Claire was born. Josh has been talking about going to Half Moon Bay for a long time so we decided to make it happen. Josh is drawn to the downtown shops but with little kids in tow, we decided to explore other more kid friendly parts of the area.
After breakfasting with my family, we packed up the car, kids and Lola and headed to the coast. The drive is beautiful, passing through San Francisco before arriving on highway 1 along the ocean. The kids dozed, Josh and I chatted and Lola made herself comfortable on my lap. Our first stop was a small town about 20 minutes south of Half Moon Bay called Pescadero. I found Phipps Country Store and Farm in the Half Moon Bay things to do guide. We were in luck the strawberries were just coming into season. We picnicked on the grass in front of the store before grabbing our baskets and heading to the berry patch.

This place is great. Its totally run down or at least has a run down look but huge fields full of strawberries, ollaberries and boysenberries. On the way to the berry patch you pass through a bunch of coops with turkeys, chickens, roosters, pheasant, peacocks, cornish game hens, a sheep and a couple bunnies. Claire got a huge kick out of this. She got so distracted by all the birds that we had to bribe her to go out to the berry patch.
This place is also dog friendly! Yay Lola enjoyed sniffing the berries and even got to sample a couple. A Sunset Magazine photo editor was there doing a piece and got a few pictures of Claire. Check out their upcoming issues to see if Claire made it in : ). We picked three lbs of strawberries that have graced our cereal, smoothies and plates the last few days. we hope to get back there later in the season when more berries are ripe for the picking.
