I’ve been preparing for this day all week long. After the doctor visit on Monday Josh and I sat down to decide how best to attack this challenge. We decided that perhaps sweetening the pot for Claire might help her out a little and give her some extra security.
All day yesterday we prepped Claire saying that Daddy needed to sleep in his big bed because Claire’s bed was for Claire and just her size and daddy’s bed was for daddy and just his size. We got her a little flash light (because she’s been obsessed with them lately) that she can stick under her pillow and that way if she doesn’t want dark (she does have a night light), she can use the flash light.
Today we headed off to Build a Bear. We thought Claire could choose a sleep buddy to snuggle at night. It won’t be the magic pill but perhaps it will bring her security and comfort.

Josh explaining to Claire about building a bear and choosing a sleep buddy.

Claire looked at all the animals to choose from and settled (very quickly I might add) on Turner the Speckled owl. Her choice, whether or not she is aware is somewhat poetic. She loved the owl that lived in the palm tree at our old house. She also loves this little book called Owl Babies. So Claire chose a “night owl” to be her snuggle buddy.

Claire helping to stuff her owl. Josh and I each took a heart, kissed it and Claire put them inside the owl. She was thrilled about the give it a squeeze part to make sure the owl had enough stuffing.
Fluffing the owl, now named Sarah after one of the Owl Babies in the book.

Ta Da! Meet Sarah the Owl, Claire’s bedtime snuggle buddy.
Here goes night one. We pray that Claire has uninteruppted and peaceful sleep. We decided to work on Conor’s sleeping tonight from his current arrangement (his bed in the closet). Let the road toward good, restorative, healthful sleep begin! (and lots and lots of coffee to pave the way for mom and dad).
